The concept of the ORLCA repository (pronounced "orca"), is to develop a first-of-its-kind open-source, curated database of Life Cycle Assessment data specifically for research.
The aim is that the ORLCA repository would collate environmental impacts of resources to facilitate comprehensive Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs), enable sustainable design choices, and ultimately contribute to environmentally responsible cutting-edge scientific research by providing open-source, unrestricted and sustainable access to data.
You can find out more at our arXiv pre-print here!
The project has garnered a lot of interest and support so far. If you are interested and wish to find out more about contributing or collaborating, send an email to orlca [at] hecap [dot] eco!
We thank our partners for their in-kind support!
The ORLCA concept originated from the difficulties encountered by researchers performing LCAs.
Creating an LCA database for the whole of basic research is an enormous task. Initially, the ORLCA project will initially focus on developing the database and populating it with data from particle and accelerator physics, and astronomy - two fields that have been increasingly performing and publishing LCAs in recent years, but struggling with access to data. We are also welcoming collaboration from other fields!
This project aims to provide open access to bespoke LCA data and training to enable the performance of environmental impact assessments and LCAs. This will help members of basic research to understand their environmental impacts and, ultimately, enable impact reduction.
